Book Description

“Dragons do not exist.” Ella Hixson shrieked as the mythical beasts dive from the sky shredding her car with their impressively long talons and sending her careening across the road in an attempt to avoid the being flambéed. Escaping her car, she grasps the car door in order to prevent herself from tumbling down the slippery embankment. Pouring rain soaks Ella’s interview suit and her dress shoes as she searches the sky for the attacking beasts to find nothing but clouds heavy with their payload of rain.

Hallucinations, relationship destroying fights with her only surviving relative-her mother, and, thanks to a bodaciously bosomed, bottle-blond, jobless, Ella needs the universe to cut her a break.

Be careful what you wish for.

Circumstances conspire and Ella’s mundane existence evaporates when she discovers she is Drakkon, the hidden heir to an ancient dynasty, and she has an enemy who would see all the Drakkon race enslaved or dead.

No more ordinary days for Ella as she learns what it is to be Drakkon, tries to save a world she knows nothing about, and still be home in time to feed her dog.

~ Interview ~
1. Hello Leila! I am very happy to have you on my blog. First of all, when did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Bia, thank you so much for interviewing me. I can’t remember a time I wasn’t telling stories. When I was a kid, we’d make up adventure games where we’d explore other planets and run around like maniacs. Then I started scribbling bits and pieces of stories down in notebooks and scraps of paper. Storytelling is a way for me to release stress and have a vacation.

2. Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

I was and am a voracious reader. Some of the authors who really influenced my view of writing are Anne McCaffrey, Terry Brooks, Piers Anthony, Nora Roberts, Mercedes Lackey, Harry Harrison, Margaret Atwood, and Ben Bova are just a few of the authors that influenced me. Their stories engage me and entice me to re-read them.

3. What advice would you give to your younger self?

Observe everything and take notes. Then, tell the story you want to tell.

4. What inspired you to write Hot Flashes?

I took a local writing class and one of the exercises was to tell a story about an object that held importance to me. My father traveled the world and brought back so many interesting things. One was a cavalry sword from Ethiopia.  I came to class with 20 pages of single page text. When I finished reading it aloud, the instructor simply said ‘you have the beginning of a novel’.

5. What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I loved creating Ella and the world she inhabits. Everything is a cause and effect, making sure I have plausible storylines is important to me.

6. How do you think you’ve evolved creatively?

This entire process has made me a better storyteller. I still have tons to learn, but that comes with time and persistence on my part.

7. Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?

I do a lot of writing on my lunch hour at work. I also have a desk in a quiet place at home, I pop on my headphones and get to writing. Having peace and quiet helps my writing process.

8. Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

Yes, cover art plays a huge part in capturing the attention of a potential reader. It is just as important as the title. I kept the cover of "Hot Flashes" simple. I wanted it to have only elements that would be relevant to the story. The pendant is something Ella wears every day and has huge significance and the lightning is representative of the portals to the Otherverse.

9. What are four things you never leave home without?

My cellphone, tablet, wallet, and lip balm.

10. What do you think of trailers for books?

If done well, book trailers can really give the reader a sense of what the author wanted to create.

11. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

To quote the great Jason Nesmith (Galaxy Quest), ‘Never give up. Never surrender.’ Writing is hard work. It takes courage to tell the story, then courage to let others read it so you can perfect your work. If you want to be published, join a local writing organization, take classes, and find a critique group you trust. Getting the story out of your head is just the beginning.

12. Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans?

Thank you. Thank you for taking a chance on a new author. I hope you’ve enjoyed "Hot Flashes". Ella’s adventure is just beginning; I promise there will be more.
