"Aitan's Revenge" ("Starbright", #2.5) by Hilary Thompson - Review

Title: Aitan's Revenge
Author: Hilary Thompson
Release Date: 05/19/15
Edition: paperback (won at a contest organized by the author)

Summary from Goodreads:
Author's note: this novella tells the story of Asphodel after Trea leaves, bridging the time between Balance Broken and the upcoming Destiny Risen.

Aitan dreams of power.
His family dreams of revenge.

He has followed First Leader Keirna for years, careful to appear loyal even when it cost him nearly everything.

When Astrea and Lexan abandon the city, the people of Asphodel realize their sacred prophecy was false. Justice and Balance are gone, and Keirna is now free to create her own destiny. She forces Asphodel to rise early, even while Saloman rants that the prophecy is true and must be obeyed.

Aitan must work to balance his desires with Asphodel's needs, and his ties to Keirna with his task of revolution.

Unfortunately, Aitan has never been good with balance, and everything he's worked for might soon topple from the scales, becoming buried forever.

Aitan's Revenge is definitely a must-read Starbright novella that should be read after Balance Broken, which is the second book in the series.

The story is told by Aitan, who is Lexan's bigger brother and one of First Leader Keirna's followers. Aitan has caught my attention since the first book (Justice Buried) and I wanted to find out more about him. And that is one of the reasons I believe this book is more than welcomed. In the previous novels, Aitan is surrounded by mystery and suspicions and acts in a confusing manner, but in this book we get to know him really well - we get to know his thoughts on many subjects, his true feelings, his ambitions and the sacrifices he has made and is willing to make in order to fulfill these ambitions. He is impulsive, but also a very good actor and he craves for power, but also for love. Before, he may seemed cold-hearted, capable of ruthless things without blinking an eye; however, now I know he is not keen on taking lives and is capable of showing mercy and even affection.

Also, I loved Aitan's Revenge because there are so many things going on. Unlike Stian's Mistake and Lexan's Pledge (which aren't full of news), this novella is filled with action, big events, surprises - some good, some bad - which make this book a thrilling, wonderful read. People actually die in this novel and it's not just some random character. Important people die and I am wondering how the other characters are going to react when they will find out about the deaths.

Without further ado, Aitan's Revenge is amazing from all points of view. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I can't wait for the last book in this great series that is the Starbright series.

My Rating: 5/5
